Eighteen of the 31 recommended hiking trails in the Madeira archipelago that were closed due to bad weather are now walkable, the Forest and Conservation Institute said Friday, adding that safety continues to be assessed on the ground.
“Given that the classified hiking trails are part of areas subject to severe climate stress and consequent natural erosion, we warn you to be careful while walking through them,” the institution said in a statement.
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation has so far closed 13 recommended trails in different parts of the island of Madeira, namely: Areiro trail, Ilha trail, Encumeada trail, Urzal trail, Burro trail, Camino Real do Monte, Levada do Barreiro, levada das 25 Fontes, levada do Moinho, levada do Furado, Caminho Real da Encumeada, Ribeira da Janela path and Caminho Real do Pol do Mar.
The forest road connecting Eira do Serrada with Pico do Areiro in the mountains overlooking Funchal is also closed.
The south coast and highlands of Madeira Island were under a red alert from Monday 3:00 pm to Tuesday 3:00 pm due to heavy and incessant rainfall due to the passage of the Oscar Basin.
Bad weather displaced 95 people, closed training events and various public and private services on Tuesday, and forced movement at Madeira airport with dozens of flights canceled, affecting thousands of passengers.
The Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service reported more than 160 incidents, mostly related to landslides, falling trees and floods, involving 168 people and 436 operators.
