Marcelo recounts the heroic deed of the Portuguese hero who tried to stop the Annecy attack in a Portugal Day speech

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, is already speaking in Peso da Régua in celebration of Portugal Day this Saturday.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa begins by talking about another June 10th that takes place in Peso da Régua.

“It all makes sense because we need a portrait of Portugal. We want the weight of our interiors to be as important as our Lisbons and ports,” the President said, before listing several Portuguese cities.

“Unity is essential for all of us. The Douro is the history of Portugal in itself. Because she is and will be an example of the perseverance of men and women,” he adds.

“We are truly Portuguese only to the extent that we are truly universal, like our compatriot Manuel da Ponte, who did what others under 70 have not done.”

“We are 10 million inside, but we are much more,” recalls the President of the Republic, who praises all the achievements of Portugal and the Portuguese in a prominent place, such as António Guterres. “We have more weight in the world than our earthly territory.”

The President of the Republic considered it necessary to “cut down the dead branches” that stretch to the tree that is Portugal.

“We give new life to everything that needs it. We plant, we sow, we prune, we trim the dead branches that reach the whole tree. We are recreating together, in this Douro, in all our Douros, what makes our future very different and much better than our present,” he declared, never once directly mentioning any current political affair.

However, Marcelo reminds that all achievements are irrelevant if Portugal continues to “fix problems” at home.

The president recalls various moments in Portugal’s history, from the discoveries to the Estado Novo, when “the score was right, but freedom was not for everyone.”

“Long live the Douro and long live Portugal!” exclaims the president at the end of his speech.

The celebrations are accompanied by insults and whistles addressed to Joao Galamba from the public who were present at the ceremony site on June 10. Both Antonio Costa and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa were greeted with applause.
