Parliament this Friday “rejected” proposals by Chega and IL to set up a parliamentary commission to investigate the disclosure of “secrets”, with the PS bench voting against.
The SDP voted in favor of two proposals, as did the BE and the proposing parties, but a dozen written voting statements were read out on the Social Democrats’ bench, which included voting discipline.
PCP abstained from both proposals, while PAN voted in favor of the IL initiative and abstained from Chega. Livret, on the other hand, abstained from IL and voted against Chega.
On the PSD bench, deputies André Coelho Lima, Carlos Eduardo Reis, José Silvano, Fernando Negrao, Thiago Moreira de Sa, António Prua, António Malo de Abreu, António Topa Gomes, Joao Diaz Coelho and Maria Emilia Apolinario announced their votes.
This morning, the Social Democratic leader of Parliament, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, sent an email to deputies confirming that the position of the PSD “endorses” the initiatives of Chega and IL and refused any exceptions to voting discipline.
“The bulwark of every MP’s personal freedom is expressed in this political issue in the declaration of the vote,” he added in an email that Lusa had access to.
We are talking about the intervention of the Security Information Service (SIS) in the restoration of the office computer of Frederico Pinheiro, former assistant to the Minister of Infrastructure Joao Galamba.
In its proposal submitted in May, IL argued that an investigation into the interference of “secrets” should be carried out in order to “determine the political, legal or other liability associated with the work of the SIS in the current legislature.”
IL wanted to clarify issues related to the “appeal of the Ministry of Infrastructure to the GSS” on the night of April 26, “possible instructions, directives or orders” that served as the basis for its actions, as well as “the practice of the current government for those who have intelligence services” .
Chega, on the other hand, wanted to consider, in addition to SIS, the work of the Information System of the Portuguese Republic (SIRP), in particular “to assess the legitimacy and political responsibility associated with the entire process related to the recovery of a laptop.”
The party also wanted to understand whether the speech on the night of April 26 was “a one-time event or, on the other hand, there could have been other situations of political interference” and “mistreatment” by the CCC and SIRP since the establishment of the first government led by António Costa in 2015.
