Police said the 31-year-old was charged Friday with three counts of murder following the attacks in Nottingham on Tuesday.
The man also faces three counts of attempted murder and is due to appear in Nottingham High Court on Saturday.
The police did not provide additional information, namely the nationality, which the European press called the Portuguese.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the parents, originally from Guinea-Bissau, worked on the island of Madeira and received Portuguese citizenship.
The couple will later move to the UK with their three children and the suspect will have resident status as a European citizen.
The charges, filed this Friday, relate to the deaths of Nottingham University Barnaby students Philip John Webber and Grace Sasha O’Malley-Kumar, 19, and Ian Robert Coates, 65, who were stabbed early Tuesday morning. in Nottingham.
The three counts of attempted murder concern three other people who were hit by a car, one of whom is in a hospital in serious condition.
Nottinghamshire Police Chief Kate Meynell said the allegations “are an important development and are the result of our exhaustive investigation into these horrific incidents” in the English city, about 200 kilometers north of London.
“We are well aware of the deep emotions generated by these tragic events and the high level of interest not only in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, but throughout the country,” the statement said.
However, he warned that “posting malicious information online about an ongoing case could constitute contempt of court and, in the most serious cases, could result in the failure of the trial.”
This Friday, speaking to reporters, Portuguese Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho said he was in contact with the British authorities.
“Recently, this morning, we discovered that the suspect appears to be of Portuguese nationality. We are investigating this matter, but we will be in close contact with the British authorities about this,” he stressed.
