Speaking to Lusa, a meteorologist from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) said the temperature rise would be “very significant”, above average for the season and should last until at least June 27. .
“Rain or showers are forecast today, which may be locally intense and accompanied by thunderstorms in the northern and central regions and hail in the afternoon only in the interior of the north and center. In the south will be weak and infrequent. Tomorrow [terça-feira] there is a possibility that there will still be showers in the northern and central regions, rather on the coast north of Cape Mondego,” he said.
According to Maria Joao Frada, on Wednesday, the day of the beginning of summer, rain is still expected in the northern and central regions at night, but cloudiness should improve from the end of the morning.
“Then we will have a hot weather situation. We will move from moderate temperatures to hot, to higher temperatures. The hottest areas will be the Tagus Valley and the interior of the Alentejo and Algarve. In the rest of the territory, they should be above 30 degrees,” he said.
Temperatures can reach 38 and 40-42 degrees Celsius in some places south of Tagus during the weekend, according to Maria Joao Frada.
“In the rest of the territory, maximum temperatures should be between 30 and 35 degrees, with the exception of the coastal strip, which has not yet been determined. Most IPMA stations south of Tagus will contribute to the heat. IPMA should issue hot weather warnings,” he said.
The IPMA meteorologist said that minimum temperatures will also rise from Thursday and remain at least until the 27th with high values for this time of year.
“We will also have a significant increase in minimum values. We will have tropical nights, that is, temperatures equal to or greater than 20 degrees, namely south of Tagus,” he said.
Maria Joao Frada also stressed that following the hot weather, the risk of rural fires will increase to a very high and maximum level throughout the territory.
