SDP leader says it is ‘very strange’ for PM to stop in Hungary to go to football

This Monday in Palmela, the President of the PSD considered that the stopover of an Air Force Falcon 50 aircraft in Budapest so that the Prime Minister could watch a football match was a “very strange situation”.

“The situation seems very strange to me, frankly, very strange. And it is strange initially for two reasons: firstly, because about 20 days have passed without any official notification of this shift, framework, rationale, method happened,” Luis Montenegro told reporters during the Sentir Portugal initiative, which takes place this week in the Setúbal region.

“72 hours have passed since the first news of the disclosure of this circumstance and the Prime Minister’s explanation appeared. I believe that if the situation was explained as easily as the government communiqué seems to indicate, then it is not clear why the trip did not take place. according to the official program,” the SDP leader added.

For Luis Montenegro, “you don’t understand why the trip to Budapest wasn’t justified, and you don’t understand why you had 72 hours to give such a simple answer, even though the answer deepens the weirdness of this whole situation.”

This is how the leader of the Social Democrats reacted to a note published this Monday by the Prime Minister’s Office, which says that António Costa participated in the UEFA Europa League football final in Budapest at the invitation of UEFA and that he was sitting in together with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán for protocol treatment .

“On May 31, the Prime Minister traveled to Chisinau (Moldova) to attend the European Political Community Summit, which took place the next morning. In Chisinau, the Prime Minister had the opportunity to make a stopover in this city, in response to the invitation addressed to him by the UEFA President to attend the game of the Europa League final,” reads the above-mentioned note from the Prime Minister’s office.

On May 31, António Costa, who was traveling in an Air Force Falcon 50 aircraft, made a stopover in Budapest, Hungary on his way to Moldova for the European Political Community summit. Observer.

According to the same newspaper, the head of the Portuguese government attended the Europa League final game between Sevilla and Roma, the Italian team coached by José Mourinho, along with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

At a meeting with journalists, Luis Montenegro also faced the return of MP Pinto Moreira to the permanent parliamentary committees in which he participated before suspending his mandate because he was involved in Operation Whirlwind.

“Deputies have their own mandate. I already had the opportunity to say this a month ago, but if you want me to repeat it, then I will repeat it without any problems: there is an individual dimension of the mandate. I can’t interfere with this,” he told me.

“And there is the collective, political dimension of the parliamentary group. And in this we deprive the deputy of political confidence,” Luis Montenegro added, noting that deputies are legally and constitutionally obliged to carry out parliamentary work in plenary sessions and in committees of the Assembly of the Republic.
