At a press conference on the results of the PKP parliamentary days, which took place over two days in the Serra da Estrela, the leader of the communist parliament, Paulo Santos, was asked about the statements made by the Minister of Defense of Ukraine this Monday, who praised the speech of the President of the European Parliament in the Assembly of the Republic , in which she urged the PKP to go to Kiev.
In response, Paula Santos accused Roberta Metsola of an “arrogant and meddlesome attitude” as well as “deep hypocrisy”, claiming that the European Union (EU) sought to “fuel and instigate war” instead of trying to end the conflict.
“There is a simulacrum of parliament in Ukraine because there is no freedom of speech: we are talking about a government that has outlawed the left, democratic, progressive forces of parliament,” he stressed.
The parliamentary leader of the PKP considered that the power of Kyiv “is supported by Nazi forces” and “leads to suffering, even hindering the exercise of the right to opinion, facilitating arrests and murders.”
“This should really worry the president of the European Parliament. I ask: are you not worried that there is an obstacle to freedom of speech? If you are not worried that you are killing the population and people of Ukraine, the development of this war and much of what follows from this Nazi power? “, – he asked.
Paula Santos stated that “the position expressed by the PKP expresses solidarity with the people of Ukraine, who have always been on the side of the people of Ukraine, who have become the real victims of this war.”
“What we believe and what we have been talking about since the very beginning, right in 2014, is the need to stop this conflict, stop the confrontation, find a peaceful solution to solve this problem,” he said.
Speaking about the visits of six African countries to Ukraine and Moscow this weekend to promote the peace plan, Paula Santos said that in addition to these countries, there were also peace initiatives from Latin America and Asia.
“Oddly enough, on the part of the United States, the EU, what is observed with NATO is actually a path contrary to the need at this moment in the world,” he said.
On Monday, Ukraine’s defense minister praised Metsola’s speech in the Assembly of the Republic, showing a video of the moment the MEP calls on Paula Santos to invite her on a trip to Kiev.
“A brilliant example of how Roberta Metsola fights hypocrisy and “appeasement” with honesty and truth,” Oleksiy Reznikov emphasized in a Twitter post, thanking Metsola for his “commitment and support” to Ukraine and Democracy.
On Friday, Roberta Metsola called on communist MP Paulo Santos to speak in the Kiev parliament to Ukrainian deputies.
“I have decided to speak in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on April 1, 2022. [deputada Paula Santos] to say what you said here before the Ukrainian deputies. Talk to those deputies who don’t talk to women for weeks, whose children can’t go to school (…). This is not about sitting down at the table and forcing people to negotiate, but about getting Russia out of Ukraine. No more, no less,” Metsola said, addressing the PKP deputy.
