The Liberal Initiative will present a proposal for a Basic Health Law with a set of solutions in the coming weeks, including resuming partnerships with the private sector, the party chairman announced on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters at the end of a visit to the Portimão hospital in the Algarve, Rui Rocha indicated that the solution proposed by IL “is to instill logic in the user because people need medical help.”
Rui Rocha expressed his hope that the document “becomes a subject of discussion” in Portuguese society, as everyone is convinced that the current situation is “unsustainable”.
According to the official, among the IL’s proposals is the return of public-private partnerships “that were redeemed by an ideological decision”, which the Accounts Chamber considered “good decisions both from a financial point of view and from the point of view of caring for citizens.”
It is necessary for the liberal leader to find “a different solution than the current one” for the various problems that exist in the National Health Service (SNS), noting that in Portugal “there cannot be multi-year waiting lists for certain medical actions and absence of a family.” doctors for almost 1,700,000 Portuguese.”
“People need medical care, and they don’t care if a private provider or a public provider provides them with this solution,” he said.
Rui Rocha, who met with the board of directors of the Centro Hospitalar do Universitário do Algarve (CHUA) at the Portimão hospital, believes that “health problems affect the entire country”, but the Algarve has “two troubling problems that are specific to the region.”
“One of them is related to the delay in the construction of the new central hospital, a project with more than 22 years of history, and the lack of human resources, namely doctors,” he said.
According to Rui Rocha, the lack of human resources is “more pronounced” in the Algarve than in other parts of the country, “perhaps due to the lack of investment opportunities in infrastructure, because professionals are clearly interested in their professional development.” .
“Well, if hospital centers, hospitals, departments do not have the opportunity to train them, if they do not have advanced equipment, then medical workers do not understand that they can develop professionally, because there is this set of restrictions,” he stressed. .
According to Rui Rocha, these restrictions are already an incentive for the fact that medical professionals are not interested in settling and staying in the Algarve.”
