EU wants to reclaim 20% of Europe’s land and sea by 2050

On Tuesday, the 27 member states of the European Union reached an agreement on ecosystem restoration legislation that aims to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea area.

EU ministers with a portfolio of environmental protection met on Tuesday in Luxembourg and agreed on a draft law for the restoration of ecosystems in 20% of Europe and 20% of the sea by 2050.

“This text is a solid basis for negotiations with the European Parliament. [PE]. I hope that the final version of the legislation will restore healthy levels of biodiversity, address climate change and fulfill our obligations under the Kunming-Montreal Agreement,” said Swedish Climate and Environment Minister Romina Purmokhtari.

The country alternately presides over the EU Council until the end of the month.

At the same time, the 27 participants agreed that by 2030, each Member State should achieve the restoration of up to 30% of all depleted terrestrial, coastal, freshwater and marine ecosystems.

These targets should increase to 60% by the end of the next decade and to 90% by 2050.
