PSP reinforces high tourist areas in Oeiras and Cascais until September

The PSP is strengthening the areas with the highest tourist flow and bathing areas in the municipalities of Cascais and Oeiras until September 17 as part of the “Safe Summer 2023” program, the security forces said on Wednesday.

The PSP Lisbon Metropolitan Command said in a statement that under the program, which has been in place for several years, the police will deploy officers from Rapid Response Teams, Prevention and Immediate Response Teams, Traffic, Bicycle Patrols, Tourism and Security Teams. public transport stops.

The Always Present Police – Safer Summer 2023 program, which started on June 15, is aimed at preventing “criminal incidents”.

“This year, in addition to a significant increase in the normal flow of people during the summer season, Portugal is hosting World Youth Days, a major religious event that takes place in the PSP area of ​​responsibility and will be attended by thousands of pilgrims from all over the world,” the note said.

Therefore, PSP intends to prevent theft from people and inside vehicles, guarantee normal traffic and “above all, peace and public order.”

PSP will also carry out preventive and inspection work on the roads in order to ensure and improve the safety of all road users.

The Verão Seguro program, which takes place annually in the Algarve, has been extended to Lisbon, Porto and beaches with a large tourist flow due to the increase in the number of tourists and World Youth Day.

In information sent to Lusa on June 13, the Ministry of the Interior (MAI) reports that it has decided this year to extend the regular Algarve Seguro program as “a particularly difficult summer is expected due to the expected increase in the number of tourists and the high number of young pilgrims who will take participation in the World Youth Day (WYD), which takes place in Lisbon in the first week of August.

According to the ministry headed by José Luis Carneiro, the Verão Seguro program is a tool developed annually and adapted to the specific circumstances of time and territory, which includes “multiple aspects of security”, namely law enforcement, fire prevention and extinguishing, border aviation and road safety. movement.

The program, which aims to create a “general sense of security among residents and vacationers”, involves the security, civil protection and traffic safety forces.
