Ministry restricts departure of missing teachers

The shortage of teachers prompted the Ministry of Education (MOE) to suspend secondment of teachers to other public services. Rules for applying for statutory mobility, released this Friday by the Directorate General of School Administration (DGAE), are limiting the departure of teachers who teach subjects that are most needed. We are talking about teachers of the disciplines “Informatics”, “Portuguese”, “Philosophy”, “Geography”, “Physics and Chemistry” (all 3rd cycle and secondary), “Mathematics and Natural Science” (2nd cycle).

The departure of these professors to other services will be authorized only if “due to their scientific training, it is revealed that it is not possible to transfer the activity that needs to be developed to a professor from another group,” the DGAE information note says. Last July, the DOE also announced that 500 teachers employed in other public services would return to schools. This Friday, 91,211 students took their 9th grade Portuguese final exam. 11,171 students passed the secondary exams in economics A, and only 199 in German.
