Madeira and three mainland counties are under orange warning due to hot weather

The areas of Évora, Beja and Faro, as well as the Madeira archipelago, are under an orange warning due to hot weather, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The warning due to the persistence of high maximum temperatures will last until 21:00 Monday, then change to yellow until 18:00 Wednesday.

IPMA has also placed the districts of Setúbal, Santarém, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Viseu, Vila Real and Bragança under yellow alert due to hot weather until 18:00 Wednesday.

The Madeira archipelago will be under an orange alert from 09:00 to 21:00 on Monday, and then change to yellow until 09:00 on Wednesday.

An orange warning indicates a meteorological situation with moderate or high risk, and a yellow warning is issued by IPMA whenever a risk situation arises for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.

IPMA predicts until Wednesday in the interior of the north and central and south areas above 30 degrees Celsius in most of the territory, between 35 and 40 degrees in the interior south of Tagus and in Beira Baixa, where they can be reached 40 to 43 degrees .

Minimum temperatures will also be high, with tropical nights (minimum above 20 degrees) in several places in the center and south, with an emphasis on the Sotavento Algarvio region where it could be close to 25 degrees.

At stake, according to IPMA, is “the combined action of an anticyclonic region between Western Europe and the Madeira archipelago, as well as a low-pressure valley that extends from North Africa to the Iberian Peninsula, causing tropical air mass transport.” with a continental origin, which favors the meteorological conditions of hot and dry weather.

An IPMA statement posted on its website said the hot weather should be more prolonged south of Tagus and Beira Baixa, where heat is expected until Wednesday.
