Seven municipalities in the district of Faro are at maximum risk of fire

The municipalities of Lagos, Portimão, Monchique, Silves, Loulé, San Bras de Alportel and Tavira in Faro district on Tuesday pose the highest fire risk in rural areas, as well as some places on the island of Madeira, according to IPMA data.

More than 50 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Beja, Lisbon, Santarem, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Guarda, Bragança, Vila Real and Viseu are in very high fire danger on Tuesday, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) indicates.

The Institute also placed several municipalities in all areas of the mainland except Viana do Castelo in a very high fire risk group.

Due to the hot weather, the fire hazard will continue until at least Saturday.

The IPMA has placed the south coast of Madeira under the highest risk of a rural fire, which is under a red alert, the most severe of three points, until 20:00 this Tuesday due to hot weather.

The IPMA statement said that “the combined action of an anticyclone located northeast of the Azores archipelago, which extends as a ridge to the Bay of Biscay, and a low pressure valley located between North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula, allows transporting masses of hot and dry air to the Madeira archipelago “.

In the coming days, the archipelago as a whole is expected to reach temperatures of about 30 degrees Celsius, which on the southern slopes can reach values of about 35 degrees.

This risk, as defined by IPMA, has five levels, from reduced to maximum, and calculations are made based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall over the past 24 hours.

IPMA predicts cloudy or clear skies across the continent this Tuesday, obscured by smoke particles from fires in Canada, occasional strong winds on the west coast and lower temperatures in the south, especially on the west coast.

The minimum temperature will range from 16 degrees Celsius (in Viana do Castelo and Braga) to 24 (in Castelo Branco), and the maximum – from 27 degrees (in Aveiro) to 40 (in Evora).

Since the beginning of the year, 3816 fires have already affected 8729 hectares of rural areas.
