CGTP promotes hundreds of strikes and demonstrations in the country this Wednesday

On Wednesday, the CGTP is holding a national day against hundreds of strikes, demonstrations, rallies and plenary sessions across the country demanding higher wages that could affect government services and companies.

“Tomorrow [quarta-feira] we are going to have a national day of struggle from north to south and also in the islands, with both the public and private administrative sectors, with a very wide range of plenary sessions, with workers coming to the doors of workplaces to demand their rights, ” said Lusa CGTP leader Ana Pires.

The workers “have a central demand, which is also a demand for national action itself, wage increases, guarantees of rights and against the rise in the cost of living,” the union leader stressed, adding that it is necessary to “respond to the difficult living conditions of workers” faced with rising prices for essential goods and housing.

According to Ana Pires, a wide range of actions are planned, including concentrations and strikes in various sectors, from public to private, which could affect the food industry, the steel industry, the hospitality industry and trade, in which a massive national strike is planned.

He pointed out that in public administration, the national nurses’ strike starting on Wednesday could also affect the health sector, and in municipalities “where more than 50 hostilities are planned” the effects should also be felt.

For the CGTP, “there is an urgent need for a general increase in wages and pensions, an end to speculation that benefits large economic groups, control and reduction in prices for essential goods and services, taxing the profits of large companies. and change the course of a policy that has been followed and that is pushing an increasing number of workers into poverty.

Among the planned actions are plenary meetings, meetings and strikes in various city councils in the country and in companies such as Matutano, Lactogal, Nobre, EDP stores and Grupo Altice.

Demonstrations are also planned in Lisbon and Porto starting at 15:00.

On Thursday, CGTP general secretary Isabelle Camarinha told Luza that she was looking forward to a great day of national wrestling.

“We are confident that June 28 will be a great national day of struggle, when many thousands of workers will demand a solution to their problems: higher wages, securing rights, against the rising cost of living, for the right to health and housing,” said Camarinha in end of the meeting of the National Council.

The CGTP is calling for a wage increase for all workers of at least 10% with a minimum of €100, an increase in the minimum wage to €850 and other measures that respond to rising costs of living.
