Costa today at the opening of the general debate at the UN

Prime Minister António Costa is in New York today for the opening of the general debate of the 77th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly and meets with representatives of the Portuguese community.

António Costa arrived in New York on Monday for the annual general debate between representatives of 193 UN countries, where he will speak on Thursday, returning to Portugal the same day.

The meeting of world leaders at this session of the UN General Assembly is the first since the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine on February 24, starting a war that has been going on for almost seven months.

The motto of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly is “Solutions based on solidarity, sustainability and science”. The theme of the general debate is “Tipping Point: Transformative Solutions to Interconnected Problems”.

Following tradition at the UN, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will be the first to speak during an internal campaign, less than two weeks before the October 2 Brazilian elections in which he is running for re-election. .

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, António Costa has a meeting scheduled for today with Google’s president of global communications and Alphabet’s legal director, Kent Walker.

Today’s Prime Minister’s program ends with a meeting with Portuguese officials from the United Nations and representatives of the Portuguese community.

On Thursday, António Costa will deliver his third speech at the annual general debate between the heads of state and government of the 193 UN members in which he participated in 2017 and 2020 – this time not in person, but via videoconference, due to the covid- 19.

The Prime Minister is in New York accompanied by Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho, who is backing a busy agenda of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Portugal, which nominated the winning candidacy of António Guterres for the post of UN Secretary-General in 2016 and then reappointed in 2021 and with a term until the end of 2026, is a candidate for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2027-2028 biennium — a process which was announced in 2013 by the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Portas, and in respect of which, last year, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, requested the confidence of the Member States of the United Nations.
