The court ruled that the insurer was liable to pay compensation to the families of 12 emigrants killed in a traffic accident in Moulins, France. The decision was made seven years after the accident and after much legal wrangling.
In accordance with Newspapercompensation amounts will be determined in another case before the Lisbon Court, the first hearing of which has not yet been scheduled.
Twelve Portuguese people, aged between seven and 63, from the districts of Guarda and Viseu, traveled from Switzerland to spend Easter in Portugal. The accident happened on the night of March 24, 2016. The group traveled in an illegally adapted van with seats welded to the floor of the vehicle and no seat belts. The car was driven by a young man of 19 years old, who did not have the right to drive a vehicle that was equipped with a trailer.
The van collided head-on with a truck on Estrada Nacional 79 during an ill-conceived overtaking. The driver of the van was injured and all 12 passengers died.
The owner of the van was sentenced in France to four years in prison, and the driver to three.
