Sao Tome and Principe is the Portuguese-speaking African country that has by far the largest number of pilgrims for World Youth Day (WYD), which officially takes place in Lisbon in August, according to official figures.
A source from the WYD2023 Foundation told Lusa that 503 Sao Tome and Principe pilgrims have registered and registration has been completed.
This is followed by Cape Verde (187), Mozambique (136) and Angola (128). From Guinea-Bissau, registration is not yet complete.
In terms of Portuguese-speaking countries, Portugal has the highest number of completed registered pilgrims (26,639), followed by Brazil (5,782).
Lisbon has been chosen by Pope Francis for the next World Youth Day, which will take place from August 1 to 6, with the main ceremonies in the Eduardo VII Park and Tagus Park, north of Parque das Nasuens, on the coast. the banks of the Tagus.
WYD was born at the initiative of Pope John Paul II after the success of the meeting organized in 1985 in Rome as part of the International Year of Youth.
Pope Francis was the first to register for WYD Lisbon 2023 on October 23, 2022 at the Vatican after the Angelus celebration.
