At least 150 people detained at protests after police shot and killed a young man

French President Emmanuel Macron convened an inter-ministerial crisis unit this Thursday after another night and dawn marked by violence in response to the death of a teenager by police.

At least 150 people were arrested this morning, the second night of unrest in France after police killed Nahel, a 17-year-old black teenager, in the city of Nanterre, on the outskirts of Paris.

“A night of unbearable violence against the symbols of the Republic: town halls, schools and police stations are set on fire or attacked. 150 people have been arrested,” French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin wrote on his social media account this morning. Twitter, this morning.

In addition to those arrested, dozens of people were injured.

The use of lethal force by the police against Nahel caused outrage in France. The moment of the action of the police officers was filmed on camera, which made it possible to discard the thesis that they acted in self-defense. Shortly after 00:00, a string of overturned vehicles also caught fire.

Emmanuel Macron called “scene of violence” against the “institutions of the republic” “unjustified”, referring to yesterday’s night riots.

The French head of state wished for “the next few hours” to be dedicated to “meditation and respect”, with a march organized in memory of a young man who was killed by a policeman on Tuesday in traffic on the outskirts of Paris.

Meanwhile, the interior minister also condemned yesterday’s events.
