The Council of State of France this Thursday approved the rules of the French Football Federation (FFF) banning players from wearing the Islamic veil (hijab), given that competition organizers must dictate the rules of participation.
The Supreme Administrative Litigation Body understands that federations must establish rules for participation in their sports competitions “to guarantee the safety of the players and the observance of the rules of the game.”
“Sports federations are responsible for the proper conduct of the competitions they organize and may impose on their players a dress neutrality obligation to ensure the proper conduct of the competition and to prevent possible collisions,” the statement said. body.
Thus, the Board concluded that the ban imposed by the FFF in 2016, which prohibits “the use of signs or clothing that purportedly show political, philosophical or religious affiliation”, is “adapted and proportionate”.
The FFF rules have been challenged in court by a group of Muslim women called the Hijabeuses, who have supported FIFA’s decision to allow women football players to wear the hijab in competition as of 2014.
Hijabeuses lawyer Marion Ogier has already said she is alarmed by the decision, which “shakes secularism and free speech” and “undermines 30 years of jurisprudence” on the issue.
