On Saturday morning, a fire broke out at the Maredeus fish freezing plant in Hermidas Sado, municipality of Santiago do Casem. The building was completely engulfed in flames, and the smoke was visible for several kilometers.
The warning came in around 9:45 am.
According to some witnesses, an explosion was heard before the flames spread. At this time, there was no one in the room.
Albano Pereira, an adviser to the Chamber of Santiago do Casem, also stated that “probably a short circuit caused a fire in a factory that employs ‘about 300 people’ in total.”
A total of 18 vehicles and 50 firefighters from Alcácer do Sal, Beja, Castro Verde, Cercal do Alentejo, Ferreira do Alentejo, Grandola, Odemira, Urique, Santiago do Casem, Santo André and Vila -Nova de Milfontes, in addition to the GNR and the command of the Port Authority of Sines and Algarve.
