IL says there is “no point” for government officials to give an opinion on the new airport’s location.

On Monday, the IL leader said it “doesn’t make sense” for officials to comment on possible locations for the new Lisbon airport, given that they undermine the credibility of the work of the technical commission.

“There is no point in being with rulers issuing opinions on one of the options. All this must be done thoughtfully, because what they are doing takes away the credibility of the technical commission,” Rui Rocha said in an interview with journalists in front of the Algueiran-Mem Martins health center in the municipality of Sintra.

The IL leader reacted to statements this Sunday by the secretary of state for nature and forests, who felt that choosing Santarém as the site for Lisbon’s new airport would make “a lot more sense,” about two weeks. after Infrastructure Minister João Galamba felt it was “far away”.

For Rui Rocha, government officials’ statements are a “big mess” that “doesn’t lend credibility to the process” of choosing a new airport.

“After some time, what does the technical commission do? Because if there is already an official who says one thing, then it happens that another one says something completely different … ”, he said.

The IL leader said that, given that the choice of a new airport lasted 70 years, it is important “that the technical commission does its job and makes a credible proposal.”

“Otherwise, we risk jeopardizing a few more years of delay and I think there is one thing that we have already done in Portugal: the airport is really needed, and every year of delay in its availability is a year of damage to what could be revenues associated with the movement of the airport,” he stressed.

Rui Rocha also felt that the statements of the Secretary of State for Nature and Forests were discrediting João Galamba and stated that “this is not the first time” that the Minister’s truth has been called into question.

“He himself has already presented several consistent truths on other topics, and now we have a Secretary of State who has a truth different from that of João Galamba. As Joao Galamba said, “The truth takes a lot of work to build.” , he referenced, alluding to statements made by the Minister of Infrastructure to the TAP Commission of Inquiry, who said “recovering the truth takes work.”

However, the IL leader said it was “good” that the secretary and minister “understood each other.”

“Even if this construction of truth cannot be done in a coordinated way, it is in fact a big mess,” he argued.

Asked if IL preferred the location for the new airport, Rui Rocha replied that his side “wants to know the technical basics” and will wait for the work of the technical committee before giving an opinion.

“Unlike the government, which proposes different solutions, as Joao Galamba did and as the Secretary of State did now, we will wait for these technical studies, we will evaluate them and we will definitely announce them. Reverse process. , he emphasized.

At the opening of the Feira Mostra de Mação this Friday, Secretary of State for Nature and Forests João Paulo Catarino considered that a new airport in Lisbon “would make a lot more sense” in Santarém, or that region, according to the Mirante newspaper, according to the Mirante newspaper.

“It is important that PSD also get involved and also help us protect this place, which for me is also of the greatest interest to the country,” added the official, who was mayor of Proença a Nova from 2005 to 2016.

The claims came after Galamba felt on June 20 that Santarém was “far” from being the new Lisbon airport, adding that he thought the chance of the site being selected was “very low”.
