“By ratifying the resolutions of the Assembly of the Republic on the approval of the protocols to the North Atlantic Treaty on the accession of the Republic of Finland and the Kingdom of Sweden, signed in Brussels on July 5, 2022, the President of the Republic emphasizes the fundamental importance of this step towards strengthening the Atlantic Alliance as one of the basic structures in terms of security and defense” , – the administration of the President of the Republic says in a note.
On Friday, the Assembly of the Republic ratified Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO by voting against PCP and BE and in favor of PS, PSD, Chega, IL, PAN and Livre.
The resolutions proposed by the Government on this subject, approved by the Council of Ministers on 14 July, were submitted to the Assembly of the Republic on 19 July, after having been sent to the Parliamentary Committees for Foreign Affairs and the Portuguese Communities, as well as to the Ministry of National Defence. Committee.
Since the last plenary session before the parliamentary recess took place on 21 July, the relevant proposed regulations were sent in September.
In both texts, one on Sweden, the other on Finland, the government reproduces the same arguments as to the reasons that justify the joining of the two countries to the Atlantic Alliance.
According to the PS-led executive, both Finland and Sweden “now meet the necessary conditions for NATO membership as a result of cooperation in various fields within the parameters defined by the Alliance.”
The Executive Director emphasizes that the accession of two European Union (EU) member states to NATO “will contribute to strengthening the mutually supportive security and defense relationship between the two organizations, while scrupulously respecting the principles enshrined in the respective treaties.”
“It will also help strengthen the Atlantic Alliance as one of the basic structures in terms of security and defense, which is in line with the two main national foreign policy goals,” the texts signed by the Prime Minister say. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Sweden and Finland, two traditionally neutral countries, applied to join NATO on May 28.
After initial resistance from Turkey, NATO Heads of State and Government met at a summit in Madrid on 29 June and formally invited Sweden and Finland to become members of the Alliance.
In this sense, the accession protocols of the two countries were officially signed by the ambassadors of 30 NATO member states on July 5 and now must be ratified by the parliaments of all countries of the Atlantic Alliance and brought to the attention of the Alliance government.
