The mid-term elections for the PS Lisbon municipal political commission will take place on Friday, and the only candidate will be former health minister Marta Temido, who has already declared her availability to run in the 2025 municipal elections.
“There is a time for everything, and in due time PS will make this choice. This is not an energy project, and certainly not a personal project. It is a project to create solutions that improve people’s lives,” said Marta Temido at the presentation of the candidacy for the presidency of the Lisbon PS Council, last Thursday, June 29th.
When asked by journalists about the possibility of being a Socialist candidate for the presidency of the Lisbon City Council in the next local elections in 2025, the former Minister of Health replied: “Just like I was available for this job in the municipality. I will be available if the Socialist Party needs me, but now is not the time.”
In the nomination of Marta Temido, President of the Lisbon Federation of Urban Areas of the Socialist Party, Duarte Cordeiro, who was once an adviser to the Lisbon Chamber and is now a minister in the government led by Antonio Costa, stressed the fact that the national headquarters of the PS should be filled, believing that “this is not accidental.”
“Martha will lead us in the process of rebuilding the Lisbon City Council,” said Duarte Cordeiro, noting that the Lisbon Council candidacy “clearly represents the expectation, hope and confidence of the Socialist Party in Lisbon.”
In the September 2021 municipal elections, the Social Democrat Carlos Moedas was elected Mayor of the Lisbon City Council by the Novos Tempos (PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM/Aliança) coalition, removing the autarky from the PS, which led the capital’s executive branch for 14 years.
“The Lisbon we want” is the “slogan” of the candidacy led by Marta Temido, who will be put to the vote in the mid-term elections for the Lisbon PS Council on Friday.
“The Lisbon we want is committed to a fairer city for all, while defining territory and promoting global sustainability,” said Marta Temido, criticizing the current PSD/CDS-PP leadership, which rules without an absolute majority, for urban hygiene, which is “work worse” and “chaotic” mobility in the city.
In February, the former Minister of Health temporarily assumed leadership of the Lisbon PS Council until new elections were called for the body following Davide Amadou’s resignation after CNN Portugal/TVI reported that he was accused of economic crimes. involvement in business and abuse of power.
The former health portfolio holder was number two on Lisbon’s socialist council, so she continued to serve as president until new elections were held.
