A cartoon depicting a police officer in a shooting range shooting at various targets, without the target depicting a hit white person and with the target depicting a black person littered with bullets, is controversial.
The cartoon titled “Carreira de Tiro” aired on RTP in the advertising space for public television coverage of the NOS Alive music festival.
The police consider the cartoon “offensive” and claim that it “incites unrest and violence, making potential targets of security and service professionals.”
In a statement sent to the newsrooms, the Standing Coordinating Committee of the Security Forces and Security Services, which represents the major trade union structures, says the cartoon in question “obviously and unfortunately damages the image and good name of not only the police institutions.” in general, but also the professionals to which they belong.
“We do not endanger freedom of speech, but this is clearly insulting and insulting to those who every day do the possible and impossible for all citizens of Portugal to live in safety,” the statement said.
This structure criticizes, in particular, the fact that the cartoon was broadcast on public television, emphasizing that it has “increased responsibilities.”
