The Assembly of the Republic authorized this Friday the visit of the President of the Republic to Cape Verde next week with a vote against Chega and in favor of other parties.
In the consent request, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa requests permission to travel to Cape Verde between 9 and 11 December “to attend the ceremony of homage and posthumous conferment of the degree of honorary doctorate to Amilcar López Cabral”.
Amilcar López Cabral was born in Bafata (Guinea-Bissau) in September 1924, but went to live in Cape Verde as a child, where he studied.
In 1945, he received a scholarship and entered the Instituto Superior de Agronomia in Lisbon, where he came into contact with anti-fascist groups. In 1959, together with Aristides Pereira, his brother Luis Cabral, Fernando Fortes, Julio de Almeida and Elise Turpin, he founded the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).
On January 20, 1973, Amilcar Cabral was assassinated in Conakry, until that Friday he was considered one of the greatest thinkers of African anti-colonialism.
According to the Constitution of the Republic, the President of the Republic cannot leave the territory of the country without the consent of the Assembly of the Republic.
