On Saturday, the show’s promoter, Alvaro Covoes, called on those in charge of television channels to dedicate three minutes per hour to culture on information services to stimulate knowledge and cultural consumption of the Portuguese.
“I left a challenge here. Why doesn’t television set – all news channels, all news services – three minutes of Culture an hour. It’s worth nothing,” the promoter said in statements to Luce on the sidelines of the 15th edition of the Alive festival, which ended early in the morning this Sunday.
The promoter told RTP this week that the Association of Promoters of Shows, Festivals and Events (APEFE), which brings together the main promoters of shows and festivals in Portugal, has proposed to the Ministry of Culture to set a quota of 5% per hour of Culture news in TV information services.
Álvaro Covois explained that the proposal was made with the understanding that “cultural practices in Portugal are the lowest – they are not the lowest, they are the lowest – in Europe.”
“Like what happened with the quotas for Portuguese music on the radio, which worked fantastically, maybe it made sense to have a quota. Television is also licensed, as is radio, so we thought it made sense,” he said.
Speaking to Lusa, the promoter said that he thought “the challenge should be launched differently”.
“I am categorically against regulation, we live in a developed society, and entrepreneurs, companies, managers should also do what we learn in school, which is self-regulation. They could set an example for society, even make Portugal a better country,” he said.
Alvaro Cooins believes that the same thing that happens with the war in Ukraine or football can happen with Culture.
“We are already super informed about Ukraine. Many of us already know Ukraine better than Portugal – this is not criticism, this is reality – because all the information comes to our homes every day,” he said.
For the promoter, “it means television has a very strong influence.”
“The same thing happens with football, which has a lot of air time. If television brings more Culture to the information, if they talk more about the theater, about literature, about exhibitions, about dance, about ballet, about opera and about music, maybe we, the Portuguese, have begun to consume more culture, or at least at least know more, ”he defended.
