More than 60,000 people died in Europe due to the heat in the summer of 2022

More than 60,000 people have died in Europe due to heat waves in the summer of 2022, according to a study published this Monday in the scientific journal Nature Medicine, which recommends redoubling efforts to combat rising temperatures.

In total, the analysis shows that between May 30 and September 4, 2022, 61,672 people will die from causes directly related to the heat.

Scientists from the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) and the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) analyzed temperature and mortality data for the period 2015-2022 in 823 regions from 35 European countries, representing a total population of more than 543 million people. People.

They built epidemiological models to predict mortality for all regions for all weeks of the summer of 2022.

“This is a very high number of deaths. We knew about the impact of heat on mortality from the 2003 precedent, but with this analysis we see that there is still a lot of work to be done to protect the population,” Agence France- was told. Presse (AFP), Inserm researcher and study co-author Hicham Achebak.

Scientists estimate that without an effective response on the European continent, by 2030, on average, more than 68,000 people will die every summer, and by 2040 – more than 94,000.

Last year’s summer was the hottest on record in Europe and was characterized by an intense series of record high heatwaves, droughts and wildfires.
