The home secretary said on Monday that crime is down this year compared to 2019, a pre-COVID-19 period marked by incarceration, but “the intensity of the violence has had manifestations that require attention.”
“We have to compare crime values with 2019 because 2020 and 2021 were pandemic years and compared to 2019 values we have lower rates for both general and violent crime, but of course we should always be attentive to all manifestations of indiscipline and aggression,” Jose Luis Carneiro told reporters.
The Minister noted that crime is declining, but “the intensity of violence has manifestations that require more attention.”
In this sense, he said that the government has set up a commission for the comprehensive analysis of juvenile delinquency and crime, and the Public Security Police are developing a set of measures on their own initiative, namely special operations in the most crowded places at night.
The minister spoke to reporters at the end of the inauguration ceremony for two new chief superintendents, five new superintendents and four Public Security Police quartermasters.
Among the new promotions is Paula Peneda, current Commander of the PSP Metropolitan Command in Porto, who by reaching the position of Chief Superintendent becomes the first woman to reach the highest rank in the police force.
