UNITA, Angolan’s largest opposition party, accuses the Angolan regime of creating an atmosphere of insecurity and instability in the country, conducive to “imitation attempts” to “mask the failure of governance.”
In a statement summarizing the conclusions of the IX Extraordinary Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Political Commission of UNITA, held on Thursday, the party led by Adalberto Costa Junior says that Angola, almost a year after the last general elections, “is going through a serious crisis.”
The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) says the country is “heading towards a large-scale political, economic and social disaster”, adding that they want to “find ways to protect democracy and fundamental freedoms”.
Among the issues of concern to UNITA are actions against the democratic state and the rule of law, the persecution of political opponents, disrespect for the will of the voters, violation of human rights, widespread corruption, the seizure of state media, the instrumentalization of the judiciary and the freezing of accounts. banks of opposition parties.
UNITA also accuses the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, of contempt for the Constitution and the law.
“The Standing Committee of the Political Commission of UNITA draws the attention of the national and international public to the consequences of the atmosphere of violence, instability and insecurity that the regime creates in society and citizens, as a favorable environment for imitation of attempts and masking the failure of its management,” the communiqué said.
UNITA also reiterates that it is ready for dialogue with all living forces of society and has instructed its parliamentary group to come up with legislative initiatives in defense of a democratic state and the rule of law.
