SDP parliament leader Luis Montenegro said this Saturday that “there was disproportion” in the actions of the authorities during the searches against several SDP headquarters and names associated with the party, such as Rui Rio. “There are no sacred cows either on the side of politics or on the side of justice. We must adhere to the principles of the law,” he repeated.
Luis Montenegro spoke to journalists after the meeting at the National Strategic Council of the PSD. He explained that he considers “normal and natural” what happened to the set of elements. However, he explains that “there was a disproportion between the actions of the investigating authorities, the elements collected and the subject of the investigation.”
“SDP is a party that values transparency and respect for the law. We are available and cooperate with judicial and investigative authorities to provide all clarifications. We have nothing to fear from this. As the chairman of the PSD, I am deeply convinced that my predecessors followed all the rules for the functioning of the party, including those that concerned the deputy group,” he stressed.
On Wednesday, the Judicial Police (SP) mobilized about 100 inspectors, computer and financial experts for 20 searches, including at the home of former SDP President Rui Rio and at the party’s headquarters.
Luis Montenegro confirmed that he already had the opportunity to talk with Rui Rio about the steps. He said he was convinced that the law had always been respected over the past few years.
On Wednesday, searches were carried out at the home of former PSD President Rui Rio. The former parliament leader is suspected of hiring advisers and paying through the Assembly of the Republic (AR). The Judicial Police also raided the PSD’s national headquarters, the PSD’s headquarters, the PSD’s district headquarters in Porto, and the homes of Deputy Hugo Carneiro and Florbela Guedes, a longtime adviser to Rui Rio.
