Solid and municipal waste workers in Lisbon this Monday called off a strike they had planned for World Youth Day after reaching an agreement with the city council, the union announced.

Speaking to Lusa, SNOMT Vice President Manuel Oliveira explained that the strike was canceled because an agreement had been reached with chief executive Carlos Moedas (PSD) regarding the payment of “auxiliary titles for function” that workers have been supporting since 2020.
“Since the previous executive branch (presided over by the socialist Fernando Medina), the Lisbon Chamber did not apply this, which is prescribed by law. This issue is outdated and there is an obligation to pay it to workers from 2024,” he said.

Manuel Oliveira also added that the need to “fine-tune” work schedules was also discussed.
“What I can say is that the talks were held at a high level and we reached a consensus,” he said.
