Montenegro accuses PS of impoverishing Portugal

SDP President Luis Montenegro this Saturday accused the PS governments of Portugal “getting poorer” and “being at the bottom of the table”.

“We are in a cycle of rapid impoverishment, we stay at the bottom of the table when we have everything to be at the top,” the Social Democrat leader said, continuing: “There are about two million people in Portugal with an income of 554 euros or less. And many of those who earn more than that receive social benefits from the state. Without them, the poverty line would have reached 4.5 million Portuguese.”

Luis Montenegro spoke at a PSD Christmas dinner in Castelo de Paiva, in the north of the Aveiro district, where he pointed out to the militants that “everywhere in Europe there was a pandemic, high inflation and the consequences of the war. in Ukraine”.

But these countries, he noted, have “more hope, more wealth creation, more opportunities and more jobs” than Portugal.

“We don’t have many reasons to become poorer when others get richer, namely the countries that compared us,” he stressed, leaving some indicators.

“From 2016 to 2021, Portugal grew by 7.1%, while the average for cohesion countries grew by 18.4%,” he said.

For the leader of the largest opposition party, this is a “socially disastrous picture” and the country fails to “use the opportunities and potential to turn the tide.”

The social democratic leader believes that the socialist government had “all the tools to turn the tide in the country.”

“In 2015, PS inherited a neat house, a growing country, declining unemployment, certain public accounts and access to finance like never before in Portugal,” he recalled.

Montenegro recognized that socialists “may even want to succeed, but they can’t”.

“They don’t want to, they can’t. For 27 years, 20 ruled. In the second seven there was bankruptcy, and in these seven there was impoverishment,” he stressed.

The SDP leader assured that the Social Democrats are “extremely committed” to preparing to “govern this country”.

“To fight something that we cannot accept, namely this fatality, when we are always reaching out, bankrupt, impoverished, waiting for subsidies to be provided to us in Europe,” he said.

Montenegro emphasized that “the growth of prosperity is the starting point for the eradication of poverty” in Portugal.
