The PS parliamentary leader argues that the current situation in the country shows that “the country is growing” and “governed well in difficult times”, despite the recognition that “much remains to be done”.
Speaking to the Lusa news agency as part of Thursday’s debate on the state of the nation in the Assembly of the Republic, Eurico Brillante Diaz said that the current state of the country “offers good prospects for 2024.”
“The state of the nation today is a country that is growing economically, has maximum employment, (…) [em que] we are already seeing how prices break the trend of growth and where support measures reach the Portuguese, the most vulnerable, in support of rents, housing loans, ”he listed.
Brilante Diaz said that in Portugal “exports are growing, breaking the 50% barrier” and “public and private investments are growing significantly.”
For the PS MP, Portugal is “a country that continues to be well-governed in difficult times” and that “continues to bet on the future and revenue policy.”
“With the right accounts, it was possible to increase the number of civil servants and pensioners in 2023 on a temporary basis, it was possible to maintain and develop future-oriented policies, and in particular for the middle class and youth, with a good income policy. “, He said.
Despite this, Brillante Diaz acknowledged that “much more needs to be done”, especially in public schools, to “continue to reduce school dropouts” or “strengthen social networks and overcome some of its structural problems”, such as the lack of family doctors.
“We still need to move forward with the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) (…) and, given political stability, we should continue on that path until 2026,” the year the current legislature ends. emphasized.
According to the leader of the socialist parliament, the country “has direction, there is direction, good government and political stability of the majority in the Assembly of the Republic.”
Asked if the disagreements in the government this year have affected political stability, Brillante Dias stressed that the executive branch resolved these cases without changing its “basic course” and without abandoning its program.
“I am not discounting cases, but cases are not the essence or heart of management: the essence of management is to continue to solve the structural problems of the Portuguese economy and society,” he said.
Ahead of the next legislative session, Brillante Dias recalled that in 2024 the 50th anniversary will be celebrated on April 25, and in 2025 the elections for the Constituent Assembly, and announced that PS will have initiatives to celebrate both events.
“As part of the celebration of these 50 years, a number of initiatives, of a different nature, from conferences and eventually other instruments, will be organized that bring us closer to the historical milestones of the parliamentary participation of the PS in a more global framework. on the celebration of the 50th anniversary of April 25 and the Constituent Assembly,” he announced.
