Three people were killed and six injured, three of them seriously, this Wednesday in a shooting in Auckland, New Zealand.
New Zealand Police responded to the shot and cordoned off several streets in the city center and in a statement acknowledged the incident as significant, asking the public to avoid the area.
Local police chief Sunny Patel confirmed the death of the shooter and two others in gunshots in the city center on Thursday morning (07:22 local time).
Shooting was limited to a building under construction. Large numbers of police remained in the area and several emergency services were called to action.
“Serious incident this morning [de quinta-feira] it is in a building under construction on Queen Street. Police are asking the public to avoid the lower part of Queen Street and those in downtown buildings to stay inside,” the statement said.
The incident happened as many football teams gathered for the Women’s World Cup. The first game is scheduled for Thursday between New Zealand and Norway.
At a press conference, the head of government also stressed that the Women’s World Cup will continue as expected for the time being, without changing the level of threat to national security.
“Oaklanders can rest assured that the police have neutralized the threat and are no longer looking for anyone in connection with the incident. The safety of New Zealanders is our priority,” he said.
Chris Hipkins also stated that “there was no political or ideological motivation” for the “shotgun” firing from the upper floors of Queen Street and thanked the police for the “heroic act” of containing the incident.
The Women’s World Cup will take place from 20 July to 20 August in New Zealand and Australia, with the Portuguese team taking part in the competition for the first time.
Portugal, who compete in New Zealand-based Group E, will make their debut in Sunday’s competition against the Netherlands starting at 1930 local time (0830 GMT) in Dunedin before playing against Vietnam on 27 July. starting at 7:30 pm local time (8:30 am Lisbon time) in Hamilton and facing the United States in Auckland on August 1 starting at 7:00 pm (Lisbon time).
