The number of fires that broke out in Portugal during 2022 increased by 26.8% compared to 2021 to 10,439, INE said on Friday, indicating that despite the increase, they represent about half the average number of fires over the past 20 years.
These data are contained in the Agricultural Statistics for 2022, published this Friday by the National Statistical Institute (INE), which also shows that the fire area has reached 110.1 thousand hectares in the mainland and 0.09 thousand hectares in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (28.4 thousand hectares and 0.07 thousand hectares in 2021, respectively).
These results in terms of area burnt make 2022 “the fourth most severe year in the last decade (2013-2022) with almost twice the average fire area over the past five years (58.8 thousand hectares),” the national statistical office said in a statement.
