Joao Gomes Cravinho begins his official visit to Southeast Asia on Monday

The Foreign Minister begins his official visit to Southeast Asia on Monday with visits to Indonesia, Timor-Leste and the Philippines to discuss intensifying economic relations.

Joao Gomes Cravinho arrives in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Monday, where he has scheduled a meeting with his colleague Retno Marsudi to discuss economic relations between the two countries in the context of the recent establishment of the Chamber of Commerce and a pending business mission.

The ministry said in a statement that the meeting will also serve to discuss Timor-Leste’s accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, currently led by Indonesia, as well as other current international issues such as the aftermath of the war in Ukraine.

The foreign minister will then travel to Timor-Leste to accompany Prime Minister António Costa on an official visit to Dili.

Meetings are scheduled on Tuesday with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão of Timor and other authorities in the country.

The next day, Joao Gomes Cravinho is hosted by his colleague Benedito Freitas at a meeting dedicated to deepening relations between the two countries, namely in the economic sphere, mobility, sustainable development and responses to global challenges.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs’ visit to Southeast Asia ends with a two-day stay in the Philippines. A meeting is scheduled for Thursday with Energy Minister Rafael Lotilla, and the following day the Portuguese official will be hosted by his Filipino counterpart, Enrique Manalo, to discuss the Philippines’ role as coordinator of EU-ASEAN relations.

This will be the first visit by a head of Portuguese diplomacy to the country on a bilateral visit, during which economic issues and the potential for cooperation in the field of renewable energy will also be highlighted.
