An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale was felt on the islands of Faial and Pico.

An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale was felt this Sunday on the islands of Faial and Pico, the Center for Seismic Volcanic Information and Observation of the Azores (CIVISA) said.

According to CIVISA, the earthquake was recorded at 12:33 (13:33 in Lisbon) with an epicenter about 42 km west of Capelo, on the island of Faial.

“According to the currently available information, an earthquake with a maximum intensity of IV (on the modified Mercalli scale) was felt in the parishes of Capelo, Castelo Branco, Feteira, Angustias, Matriz, Conceição and Praia do Almoxarife (municipality of Horta, Faial island) and in the parish of Candelaria (municipality of Madalena, Pico island),” the message says.

According to the Richter scale, the earthquakes are classified according to magnitude by micro (less than 2.0), very weak (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), weak (4.0-4.9), medium (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9), strong (7.0-7.9), strong (8.0-9.9) and extremal (9.0-9.9) and extremal and extremal) and extremal) and extrem ny (at more than 10 points).

The modified Mercalli scale measures “degrees of intensity and corresponding description”.

At intensity IV, which is considered moderate, “parked cars shake,” “windows, doors, and dishes shake,” and “glasses and dishes rattle or rattle,” and walls or wooden structures may creak, according to the Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) on its website.
