SDP President Luis Montenegro accused Prime Minister Antonio Costa this Sunday of “living on the moon” when he says “the country is better” and that “the people are better too.”
“This week, Dr. António Costa, in a debate about the state of the nation, you see, went to Parliament to say that the country has become better and that the people have also become better. Where does Dr. António Costa live? Only if he was talking about Madeira,” said Luis Montenegro.
The Social Democrat leader spoke at the annual PSD/Madeira party, which takes place in Chao da Lagoa, on the outskirts of Funchal, before thousands of people gathered in front of the flag stage and chanted songs such as “Montenegro ole, Montenegro ole” and “We only want Montenegro to be president.”
“How can Dr. António Costa say that people live better when more than one and a half million Portuguese do not have a family doctor, when many want to go to the hospital and clinic and stay at the door?” Luis Montenegro asked, listing a number of problems that the Portuguese face on a daily basis.
What country does Dr. António Costa live in? Dr. António Costa lives on the moon. Dr. António Costa and the Socialist Party live on the moon. But if we have a government living on the moon, the best thing we can do with this government is to put it on the street,” he said.
For the President of the PSD, if on the one hand in Madeira the regional government (PSD/SDS-PP) and its leader Miguel Albuquerque “deserve to continue to govern”, in the country “the socialist government and Prime Minister António Costa are already too much”.
“We have a drifting government and we have PSD, which is increasingly becoming an alternative. An alternative, because we Portuguese cannot match the country where we pay maximum taxes and receive minimum public services in return,” he said.
Luis Montenegro added that his party wants “a lot more for Portugal” and does not want a country “at the tail end of Europe” where “young people have to emigrate in search of opportunities”.
“We want a Portugal where more wealth is created and where more wages are paid so that our young people have the opportunity to emigrate abroad without having to.
And he backed up: “I want you to be happy, I want the Portuguese to be happy, but for this we need to change the government. In Madeira, we are going to vote for the PSD, we will have a majority, and then we will really go, as you said, for Montenegro to São Bento, because Montenegro is really going to São Bento with your support and with your help.”
The SDP President also expressed confidence in the victory with an absolute majority of the SDP/CDU-NP coalition in the next regional legislative elections scheduled for September 24, calling for the mobilization of all supporters and militants.
“We have a great government and a great leader in Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque. […] Why adventures, why experiment with this socialism, which shows in the rest of the country that it is not capable of placing the implementation of state functions at the service of the people?
Luis Montenegro also praised Miguel Albuquerque as a “serious” person, “competent”, “forward-looking”, and “the right leader” to continue to lead Madeira’s executive branch.
