Arbitration Board to release some VAR messages

The Arbitration Board (CA) of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) informed C1 referees and assistants on Monday that some audio messages with the video referee (VAR) will be made public from the 2023/24 season.

The CA statement clarified that the disclosure of certain messages serves “a pedagogical purpose in accordance with what has always been considered to be adequate practice.”

“As with the first season of the introduction of VAR in Portugal, the Board of Arbitration believes that the distribution of the audio recording helps to fully understand the role of refereeing,” the body said in a statement, adding: “In addition, the same is happening with the publication of arbitration reports.”

CA opines that “in 2017, probably because everything is new, the impact of audio disclosure was not desirable, it even contributed to more buzz around the instrument with no benefit to play.”

However, seven years after the introduction of VAR in football competition, CA “realizes that there is enough knowledge and maturity among football agents and supporters to make this spread something normal and useful.”

“Therefore, for the season that has begun, CA will publish once a month audio recordings of conversations between the field judges and VAR in all bet evaluations on the screen available on the field,” the statement said.

The SA guarantees that it will “assess the impact of this decision as the season progresses and keep it if it understands that the benefits for football and for understanding the work of arbitration agents are unambiguous.”
