A tortilla is sold in Portugal that may be linked to cases of botulism. Know which brands

The Directorate General of Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV) has warned consumers not to eat packaged fresh potato tortillas after Spanish authorities identified five cases of botulism “allegedly linked” to this consumption.

So far, no cases of botulism have been reported in Portugal associated with the consumption of the suspected products.

On Thursday, Spanish authorities announced that five cases of botulism had been confirmed, as well as two cases classified as probable, “allegedly related” to the consumption of various brands of prepackaged fresh tortillas, the DGAV said in a note.

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition explained that the same manufacturer was identified in four cases.

The Spanish group, as a precautionary measure, decided to voluntarily withdraw these products from the market, suspend their production and warn consumers not to consume suspicious products and return them to the place where they were purchased.

According to the latest available information, in Portugal the product in question was distributed to three economic operators.

The brands Chef Select (distributed by Lidl), Dia (Minipreço) and Auchan are at stake.

“While businesses are already voluntarily withdrawing goods from the market, consumers are warned as a precaution not to consume these goods and return them to the places where they purchased them,” he stressed.

The DGAV also stated that if a consumer of these products exhibits symptoms such as severe asthenia (fatigue, loss or loss of fitness), weakness and dizziness, blurred vision and difficulty in swallowing and speaking, they should contact the appropriate medical center or contact the Saúde 24 line.

DGAV is the central service of direct state administration with administrative autonomy.
