“We are going to have a national strike and demonstration, still without a set date, so that the government will solve the problems we have and so that the city councils will no longer have doubts about the right to pay overtime and subsidize the change of firefighters,” Sergio Carvalho, president of the National Union of Professional Firefighters, explained on Monday.
“The strike will continue until the situation is resolved. The government has been trying to legislate or issue an interpretation order for over two years, but nothing has been done so far,” he added. Lack of overtime pay, the shift work subsidy recently canceled for Sapadores firefighters in Setúbal, and the deregulation of working hours are the main problems that endanger firefighters’ lives. The strike “may affect all services, but the minimum services will still be determined,” assured Sergio Carvalho, who believes that what is happening “is a great irresponsibility of the government.”
Last Friday, the mayor of Setúbal was taunted and insulted by more than a hundred firefighters and family members as he prepared to reopen Feira de Santiago in Setúbal. André Martins had to leave the enclosure accompanied by a PSP.
