From romantic encounter to gruesome crime: all about the case of Daniel Sancho accused of dismembering a surgeon in Thailand

Daniel Sancho, son of Spanish actor Rodolfo Sancho, charged with murder and dismemberment Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta on Koh Phangan, Thailand. Daniel, 29, raised the alarm over the disappearance of his friend on Friday night. Arrieta’s remains were found a day after her disappearance in a junkyard on an island known to tourists for its full moon parties, when the island’s beaches are filled with revelers who dance until dawn. Daniel and Edwin agreed to meet to watch the party.

Daniel Sancho is the eldest son of the famous Spanish actor Rodolfo Sancho, who became famous in Portugal thanks to his participation in the RTP1 series Underwater Crimes, and former actress Silvia Bronchalo. The young man works as a chef at La Boheme and Boogie Burgers restaurants in Madrid.

The victim, 44-year-old Edwin Arrieta, was a surgeon from the Colombian city of Lorica in the north of the country and had a clinic in the city of Monteria.

According to local broadcaster Thai PBS, Daniel arrived on Koh Phangan on July 31 and took two rooms in a hotel on Thong Nai Pan beach. The young man claims that it was Edwin Arrieta who decided to accompany him on the trip, but the Thai police claim that it was the Colombian surgeon who paid all the expenses.

On August 2, Daniel rode his motorcycle to the island’s pier to pick up Arrieta and take him to another hotel on Salad Beach. The day before they disappeared, they were having dinner at a restaurant next to this second hotel, and that same night, security cameras caught Daniel returning to the hotel on a motorcycle. on Thong Nai Pan beachleaving the shop where he bought a knife, plastic bags and cleaning fluid.

Daniel Sancho confessed to the crime to the Thai authorities, but stated that the surgeon “held him hostage”. The local press reports that Daniel Sancho and Edwin Arrieta were lovers. The young man thinks according to Bangkok postWhat the surgeon tried to have sex with him at the hotel. Daniel refused and they got into a fight, causing the doctor to fall and hit his head on the tub. Daniel decided to dispose of the body by cutting it into 14 pieces and throwing them in different parts of the island and into the sea.

The young man checked out of the hotel on Thursday morning and went to the Full Moon party with two girls he met at the hotel. The next day, Friday, when it became known that a bag of human remains had been found, Daniel decided to inform the authorities about the disappearance of his Colombian friend. He was questioned and authorities searched the hotel room, where they found the refrigerator, toilet and sink had been cleaned, but were able to take hair samples from the sewer.

The young chef was detained on Monday by order of the Koh Samui provincial court. On Sunday, Thai police escorted Sancho to different parts of the island for a mock crime.

Since there is no prison on Koh Phangan, the Thai authorities transferred him to a prison on the neighboring island of Koh Samui. However, it is likely that he will be transferred to Bangkok so that he can be assisted by the Spanish consular authorities.

Daniel faces the death penalty

The young man faces the death penalty. However, the punishment to which he can be sentenced depends on several factors, ranging from cooperation with the authorities to the application of the 1987 agreement signed between Madrid and Bangkok, which dictates cooperation between the two countries in the execution of criminal sentences. In accordance with a countrySancho’s defense hopes to secure a transfer to Spain to serve a possible sentence.

According to Thai law, murder is punishable by three types of punishment, depending on the circumstances in which the crime took place. The most severe is the death penalty, although life imprisonment or up to 20 years in prison is also possible.

According to a Spanish newspaper, Thai justice sometimes commutes the death penalty to life imprisonment in cases of heavier sentences, but the death penalty is used when the victims are members of the security forces or high-ranking government officials. King Maha Vajiralongkorn has already pardoned on his birthday another Spanish citizen, Artur Segarra, who was sentenced to death in 2017 for the murder and dismemberment of businessman David Bernat in Bangkok. Now the businessman is serving a life sentence.

In accordance with a countryif Daniel Sancho is sentenced to life in prison, his transfer to Spain could be more difficult.
If you return to Spain, the bilateral agreement with Thailand explicitly provides that the sentence is “executed in accordance with the laws and regulations of the host state”, in this case Spain.
