At least 36 people have died in wildfires in Hawaii

At least 36 people have died and several are missing due to wildfires raging in Maui County, Hawaii.

“As firefighting efforts continue, 36 deaths have been reported to date in the Lahaina fire, which remains active,” the X (formerly Twitter) social networking site said in a statement Wednesday.

The flames led to the declaration of a state of emergency and the evacuation of thousands of people from their homes. Amid the panic, some residents even jumped into the water to protect themselves.
