The state will allocate 48.4 million euros to replace infrastructure and equipment in 92 municipalities destroyed by floods in December 2022 and January 2023, the Ministry of Territorial Unity (MCT) announced this Thursday.
In a note, the Office of Minister Ana Abruños said that a total of 92 municipalities had confirmed applications: 50 in the northern region, 14 in the center, 14 in the Lisbon and Tagus region and 14 in Alentejo.
“The total investment under consideration was more than 118 million euros, with a state contribution of 48.4 million euros,” he added.
The MCT stressed that the Secretary of State for Local Government Affairs and the Secretary of State for Budget signed a joint order authorizing the payment, and once the order is published, program contracts allowing funds to be transferred to municipalities will be signed. .
The application period for this support lasted from March 18 to April 24 this year.
Municipalities submitted requests to support dozens of interventions, “and a very significant number of applications exceeded the cost” of 150 thousand euros, of which the Commissions for Coordination and Regional Development (CCDR) checks were mandatory, making the evaluation and approval process more “demanding and complex”, mentioned.
Several areas on the mainland were hit by heavy rains between late 2022 and early this year, resulting in severe flooding, damage to roads, businesses and homes, and dozens of people displaced.
In Alges, municipality of Oeiras, the death was registered.
Several flood-affected municipalities regret the delay in delivering the support promised by the government.
This week, the municipalities of the Intermunicipal Community (CIM) of Alto Miño decided to send a letter to the Minister of Territorial Unity asking what applications were approved and the budget of each municipality affected by bad weather in this area, namely Ponte de Lima, Viana do Castelo, Caminha, Valenca and Vila Nova de Cerveira.
Weather damage in Alto Minho at the beginning of the year is estimated at 20 million euros.
