Without sparing words, Paulo Fonseca left an appeal on social networks to neither Benfica nor Braga not to agree to the sale of a pass of any player to Russian clubs.
“During this week I have been reading that Benfica and my SC Braga are considering selling Chiquinho and Tormen to Russian clubs. Benfica, which has exemplary developed campaigns to help Ukraine since the beginning of the war. I don’t want to believe it. I refuse to do this, ”the Portuguese coach, who currently heads the French Lille, wrote on his account on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
Paulo Fonseca went even further with his emotional appeal. “I know that time is ticking and people in their homes usually don’t hear much news related to the war in Ukraine anymore, but every day Russia continues to kill people and above all innocent children, maybe some of them. at home while watching a football match,” the coach emphasized, adding: “I know one thing. If Benfica and my Braga close deals with Russian clubs, then this money will drip with the blood of children who die every day in Ukraine. And a lot of those kids loved football.”
The Portuguese worked from 2016 to 2019 at Shakhtar Donetsk, and when the conflict broke out, in February 2022, he was with his family (his wife is Ukrainian) in the country and was forced to flee by car through Moldova. He therefore stepped up the call for Portuguese teams to follow Italy’s example.
“Two weeks ago, the Russian club tried to buy Rogerio, the left back of Sassuolo. The Italian club refused to enter into negotiations and stated that, for ethical reasons related to the war, it would never do so. Mir continues to serve as an example. I call on Benfica and my Braga to follow the example of the Italian club,” stresses Paulo Fonseca.
