An earthquake measuring 3 on the Richter scale was registered near Peniche

An earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale was recorded this morning near Peniche, in the Leiria region, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said.

According to IPMA, the quake hit at 1:44 a.m. and the epicenter was “about 25 km west of Peniche.”

The institute also explains that “information confirming that this earthquake was felt” by the population has not been received.

On the Richter scale, earthquakes are classified by magnitude into micro (less than 2.0), very weak (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), weak (4.0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9). , strong (6.0–6.9), large (7.0–7.9), important (8.0–8.9), exceptional (9.0–9.9) and extreme (when more than 10 ).

A few hours earlier, IPMA announced that two aftershocks, the first of magnitude 2.4 on the Richter scale and the second of magnitude 2.9, were registered at 10:16 pm and 10:24 pm, respectively, on Sunday near Montemor-o-Novo, Evora County.

The quakes caused no personal or property damage and were felt at peak intensity IV (modified Mercalli scale) in the Montemor-o-Novo region, the institute said.

The modified Mercalli scale measures “degrees of intensity and corresponding description”.

With an IV intensity considered moderate, the impact “feels inside the house” and “hanging objects sway,” feeling “a vibration similar to that caused by the passage of heavy vehicles,” IPMA describes on its website.
