President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa sent a message of condolence to his American counterpart Joe Biden in connection with the tragic consequences of the fires in Hawaii, which, according to the latest balance sheet, killed 93 people.
A note on the official website of the President of the Republic mentions that Marcelo Rebelo de Souza “expressed his regret and solidarity with US President Joe Biden.”
“The President of the Republic sent a message of condolence and solidarity to his American counterpart Joe Biden in connection with the tragic consequences of the fires in the state of Hawaii,” the text says.
The death toll from the wildfires engulfing the US island of Maui in the Hawaiian archipelago has risen to 93, according to figures released Sunday by local authorities.
Official structures predict that as the search continues in the devastated areas, new victims will be found.
Also in a statement released on Sunday by the Portuguese Foreign Ministry, the whereabouts of some of the descendants of the Portuguese missing in the fires on the island of Maui have already been located, and Portugal continues to monitor the situation in Hawaii.
In the same communiqué, “it is possible that there are still missing persons.”
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green called the fires “the biggest natural disaster Hawaii has ever experienced,” according to CNN, surpassing 61 confirmed deaths since the 1960 tsunami.
Before Hawaii became a state in 1959, the 1946 tsunami killed 158 people.
