Government appoints Paulo Batista as head of SEF in recent months

According to a report published in Diário da República, the government has appointed Paulo Batista as National Director of the Foreigners and Border Guards Service (SEF) to ensure the transition to the establishment of the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum.

Paulo Batista, 57, has been the deputy national director of this security service since June 2022 and succeeded Fernando Pinheira da Silva, who, at his request, fired the service commission.

Despite the imminent abolition of the SEF, the order justifies this appointment by the entry into force of the new Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum on October 29, 2023, which will absorb some of the powers and employees of the SEF, and “it is necessary to ensure the excellent coordination of the activities of the SEF and the performance of relevant functions.”

The appointment of Senior Coordinating Inspector Paulo Batista as SEF National Director is effective immediately.

The order, which highlights the “reputation, experience and professional competence” of the new official, was signed by Prime Minister António Costa and Interior Minister José Luis Carneiro.
