The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said this Monday that on Tuesday or Wednesday he should start visiting hospitals to find out the reasons for the restrictions that have been reported in the emergency departments of various units.
“Already tomorrow [terça] or the day after tomorrow [quarta-feira] I will have the opportunity, obviously accompanied by the government, to start getting in touch with the reality of health,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Souza in Urem (Santarem) on the sidelines of a debate class with students of the Basic and Secondary Schools.
The head of state acknowledged that “at some point in time, the pandemic and post-pandemic” made this “naturally less desirable and less likely.”
“But this is a sector that, obviously, like education and other social sectors, is fundamental to the country,” he added.
On Wednesday in Abrantes, the President of the Republic expressed his intention to visit the emergency services of hospitals in the near future to observe the “development” at a time when more and more restrictions are being registered in the country.
“I intend in the coming days and the coming weeks to go and see the places, if it does not jeopardize the health services, developments,” he warned, saying he would share, “within ten days to two weeks,” the conclusions from what you are observing.
Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said he was “following” the development of the situation, given that it is “always, every year a very difficult time” for emergency services due to the approach of winter, “and this year with three outbreaks at the same time: a classic flu, new type virus and covid-19 virus.
Faced with “pressure existing in emergency hospitals” and increasing “difficulties in responding” in many hospitals around the country, the President of the Republic said he wanted to go out to the field to see what was happening.
The head of state also thanked the medical workers for their “ability to respond, in addition to such a great work in recent years, which they have shown in difficult times.”
