The amnesty law, approved in the context of World Youth Day in early August, applies to some drivers who have been or will be punished with a driving ban for a certain period for committing a serious or very serious traffic violation, the newspaper promotes Public.
The law applies regardless of the age of the driver if the offense was committed before June 19 of the previous year and if the amount of the applicable fine does not exceed one thousand euros. However, the amount to be paid is not covered by the amnesty. Only “additional sanction” [inibição de conduzir] will be pardoned by a law published on the 2nd of this month in Diário da República, the newspaper writes.
According to the same source, the pardon does not apply to speeding, classified as very serious, which entails a minimum fine of 300 euros and a maximum of 1,500 euros, in cases where the driver is talking on a mobile phone or overtaking on the right.
Anyone who has already delivered a letter in connection with an administrative offense and is subject to the law can pick it up from September 1, even if the ban has not yet expired.
Anyone who has to deliver a letter after September 1st and is eligible for an amnesty should no longer do so.
